The university changed its brand identity, so the look & feel of the website had to be updated. Since we had a short implementation calendar and it is a really big website, we decided to work in stages. The first stage consisted on modifying only the home page, and certain details such as the header, footer and the typography of the titles. The rest of the website was kept in Wordpress, so I only had to built the home page in Webflow.
The biggest issue with the old homepage was that it had 4 navigation bars that took too much space in mobile viewports. We had to be careful with the top external links because they represented 63% of all the unique events.
The other problem was the hero slider that linked to the news website of the university. It autoplayed, so the users probably couldn't read the news (the most visited card had 3.7% of the unique events). When we checked the data in Analytics, we noticed that only 3.8% of the users came from this slider, versus 42.5% that came from organic search.
We changed the slider for a card grid and tried different compositions with high-fidelity prototypes.
While working on them, I also removed the fourth navegation bar: the profile select was moved to the top bar and the other two selects were replaced for buttons below the news grid. Those buttons had to be above the fold on desktop viewports, so the news grid was limited to 3 featured cards.
